Forward Kristin Maris lead the Vikings to a 2-0 win over Saint Martins, scoring both goals and earning head coach Travis Connell his 100th victory. It is the second straight win for the Vikings who are now 7-4-1 in GNAC play.
“It was a good team win,” said Connell. “We were a little short-handed today, but we got contributions from a lot of players.”
Maris scored in the 30th and 69th minute off of passes from two different teammates. “Brianna Jones served a fantastic ball from 40 yards and Kristin ran onto it and volleyed the ball in from 15 yards out,” said Connell, describing WWU’s first goal. “Her second goal came on a corner kick with Joana Houplin playing a perfect ball to the far post and Maris rising above everyone else and heading it in.”
The Vikings were without leading scorer Emily Frankland with a knee injury and Taylor Abrass with a pulled muscle. WWU had a 13-2 advantage in shots and gave Arthurs her 9th shutout of the year.
The Vikings are at home to face Western Oregon on Saturday (1 p.m.) for a GNAC counter at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
